Chapter Seven

In the morning, I met up with the girls for our usual drinks and chat.

“Elizabeth, you are beaming today. Is there something you want to tell us?” asked Joan.

“She is always cheerful,” replied Ruby. “I’m sure if there is something she wants to share with us, she will do so when she is ready.”

“Yes, there is something I want to share with you all,” I said. “First, I had a really good night’s sleep last night, but that’s not all.”

Everyone stopped what they were doing to look at me. I stopped talking to think about what I was about to disclose to them.

‘Oh my gosh,’ I thought, ‘what if it all goes wrong? What if the vicar doesn’t come back from Kent? How foolish would I look!’

“Come on - we want to know what you’ve been getting up to,” urged Annie.

“OK. I have been taking evening walks with our new vicar for some time. I like him very much, but I didn’t want to say anything, just in case he didn’t feel the same way about me.”

They sat very still to listen to the unbelievable story that I was revealing to them.

“Yesterday he declared his love for me, and I to him,” I announced.

“Whoop!” they all said as they all got up from their seats to hug me.

“A toy boy! You cunning old thing! Should I say Beauty and the Beast?” said Ruby with a laugh.

“Hey, what about the Prince and the Pauper? I am a poor girl, you know,” I butted in with a smile.

“But he is so much younger than you,” said Joan.

“So what? Let love overrule the age difference. If they love each other, nothing else matters. Let us be happy for Elizabeth,” declared Matilda.

“Look at Joan Collins and Elizabeth Taylor. They married men much younger than themselves,” remarked Annie.

Ruby’s warm voice came in: “What about Barbara Windsor? She married a handsome younger man too, didn’t she?”

“And they are very happy together. It is lovely - the best news I’ve had for a long time,” Matilda butted in again.

“Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Collins and Barbara Windsor are stinking rich,” Joan replied.

“I am very rich too,” I declared. “I have most of my own teeth and a lovely smile to go with them.”

They all laughed.

“I can’t wait to know what happens next. We all deserve a little happiness in our lives,” said Matilda.

“When are you seeing him again?” asked Joan.

“Tomorrow. We are going to have a picnic lunch somewhere,” I answered.

“Wow, how romantic!” remarked Ruby. “You’d better not do anything I wouldn’t do, now.”

“Oh my gosh, is that the time already? I have to go now,” I said.

We waved goodbye.

“Take care, now, and make sure you fill us all in tomorrow,” Annie shouted.

“I will, I will,” I shouted back.

Oh my gosh, my head was spinning and all I had had was a mug of water from the cold tap.

The vicar called for me at eleven o’clock. He arrived in the back of a taxi with a large bouquet of red roses, which he gave to me with a kiss.
